WWI Memorial in Washington DC

World War I Washington DC Unveiling September 13, 2024

This date has been on my calendar for 5 years, and now it is so near. My sister, Mary Kay, and I are going to attend the candlelight unveiling ceremony.

While we are in DC we are going to have fun recreating the memorable trip my mom and I took to DC in 2006.

This is an artist’ rendering of the World War I Memorial, By Sabin Howard. The high relief sculpture is 58.5’ long by 10’ tall and has 38 larger than life figures. This sculpture is likely the most significant figurative sculpture in the world today, and is the largest in the western hemisphere. Sabin Howard is being referred to as a modern day Michelangelo.

I have been following the progress of the WWI Memorial sculpture by Sabin Howard since we met in 2015, when he was teaching a webinar on artistic anatomy of the head. The teacher/student relationship transformed into a wonderful friendship. He is an amazing teacher and a wonderful human being. I am a huge fan of him and his work.

The World War I memorial bronze high relief sculpture is entitled “A Soldier’s Journey.” It took 25 tons of bronze to make this massive sculpture.

The permanent installation is in Memorial Park, which is adjacent to the White House in Washington D.C. USA. The unveiling in the park will be September 13, 2024. I will be there!

Last September got to watch Sabin sculpt a bit on the last section of the memorial in his New Jersey studio.

It was wonderful to see the finished bronze sculpture and to see Sabin. Here we are at Pangolin Editions Foundry, Stroud, England   in June 2024.

At the foundry I was trying to get a picture of the entire sculpture, but it is just too large.

This is an overview of a part of Memorial Park. The sculpture is on the wall by the reflection pool.

For a good look at the memorial and memorial park time lapse of the construction process, go to the National WWI Memorial – A Soldier’s Journey First Illumination website. Just follow this link: https://worldwar1centennial.org/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery

I am more than excited to see the fruition of this nine-year process. Stay tuned for news on how the trip went.
