Pangolin Editions, England

The foundry unveiling was everything I had hoped it would be and more. The English countryside was beautiful and the British people were charming. London is bigger and older than New York! Duh, New York, like New England, is the new version of the original England. It was so fun to see this perspective of history.

Sabin Howard and me at the unveiling of his sculpture.

The sculpture, created by Sabin Howard, is about 60 feet long and 10 feet tall, with 38 larger than life figures. It is a WWI monument that will be installed 150 feet from the White House in Memorial Park, Washington DC, this fall. The unveiling is September 13, 2024, a date that has been on my calendar for years. I will be there.

Actually seeing and touching this most amazing sculpture, entitled “A Soldier’s Journey,” was beyond description. I have been following Sabin Howard’s trek for the past 9 years, as he worked through the stages of award, concept design, photography and drawings, endless client revisions, maquette production, approval, logistical challenges, foundry selection, model selection, and finally, sculpting. The sculpting work was done in the last four years.

Because Sabin and his team have been so good at posting on social media, many of us have been able to observe this amazing process. The description as the world’s most significant figurative sculpture of our time fits perfectly. Sabin is being described as the Michelangelo of our day. I would say Bernini, because I think Bernini was even better than Michelangelo.

The molding, wax production, bronze casting, chasing and assembly were all done at Pangolin Editions foundry in Stroud, UK. The 3D photogrammetry and production of the clay coated armatures were also done there.

It was not possible to get a photo of the sculptue in its entirety.

Here are my photos moving along from left to right, as the story of the soldier’s journey unfolds.

The after party setting at Burleigh Court hotel was otherworldly. The food was delicious.

The hotel grounds were spectacular. Put this historic manor hotel on your list if you are ever in Stroud, England.

The country side view was breathtaking.

There was so much more to our trip, but this was the main event.

Stay tuned for a post about the unveiling in September.
